Russia Must Abide by the UN Charter, as per the United Kingdom and India

As per a summary supplied by Johnson’s office, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Indian PM Narendra Modi emphasized during a phone discussion on Tuesday that Russia should respect the United Nations Charter.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has sparked a schism between India, which imports Russian armaments, and its Western friends, who have urged India to denounce Russian President Vladimir Putin more forcefully.

On Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi and UK PM Boris Johnson spoke on the phone about the situation in Ukraine.

“The leaders agreed that Ukraine’s integrity and territorial sovereignty must be respected and that Russia must adhere to the United Nations Charter,” read Johnson’s office statement. “Both also agreed that respect for international law was the only way to ensure global peace and prosperity,” it added.

Johnson also stated that both nations must step up efforts to encourage regional peace and de-escalation.

Statement released

According to a statement from the PMO, Modi underlined India’s long-standing call for an end to hostilities as well as a return to the road of discussion and diplomacy. He highlighted India’s trust in international law and all states’ territorial integrity and sovereignty as the foundation of the modern world order.

“The pair agreed that Ukraine’s integrity and territorial sovereignty must be respected,” after the call, Johnson’s office published a statement.

“Russia needed to adhere to the UN Charter, the leaders said, and both agreed that respect for international law was the only way to ensure global peace and prosperity.”

The two leaders reportedly discussed bilateral problems and decided to explore the possibility of expanding cooperation in sectors such as commerce, investments, technology, defence, security, and people-to-people connections.

PM Modi acknowledged his delight at the positive momentum within the ongoing bilateral Free Trade Agreement negotiations. He also praised the progress in implementing the ‘India-UK Roadmap 2030,’ which was established during last year’s Virtual Summit between the two leaders.
