Lata Mangeshkar Passes Away at 92
Lata Mangeshkar, a legendary vocalist, passed away on Sunday in Mumbai, aged 92. Mangeshkar’s demise, dubbed “Swar Kokila” by her legions of fans, marks the end of an era within Indian cinema.
Lata Mangeshkar, the iconic vocalist, died on Sunday in Mumbai, aged 92. Within a career that spanned over eight decades, the talented vocalist known as the Nightingale of India had donated her voice to thousands of songs in over 36 languages.
Covid-19 with pneumonia was already identified in Mangeshkar. As per the medical director at Breach Candy Hospital, Mangeshkar Ji passed away around 8.12 a.m. “She came here as a Covid patient, and age were against her. We tried our level best to save the legend. But she had complications,” he said.
According to the Maharashtra government, the artist would be given a state funeral. According to the hospital director, Mangeshkar’s family intends to transport her mortal remains to her home, Prabhu Kunj, for 2 hours. After that, her lifeless remains would be transferred to Shivaji Park for public viewing before being cremated. Two days of national mourning have been declared in honour of the Bharat Ratna awardee. For 2 days, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast, and there will be no formal entertainment.

Dr Pratit Samdhani from Breach Candy Hospital, who treated her, said she had been enduring the procedures well enough on Saturday, but her condition worsened later.
She was taken to Breach Candy after contracting COVID and pneumonia during the first week of January. Doctors later claimed that her health had improved. She was extubated and removed from the intrusive ventilator earlier this week.
Mangeshkar experienced lung problems two and a half years ago, for which she was treated. She also utilized oxygen at home regularly.
Lata Mangeshkar was born in MP on September 28, 1929, with music in her blood. Three National Awards were bestowed upon Mangeshkar, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989. She was given the Bharat Ratna in 2001 for her dedication to the arts, making her the second vocalist to earn this honour after late Carnatic music legend M S Subbulakshmi. She also received the Padma Vibhushan as well as Padma Bhushan awards.
