ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022: Teams & Complete Schedule

The ICC or the International Cricket Council is the governing body of cricket. The ICC organized a special tournament to popularize the T20 format of the game. The event was proposed to be held once every two years. Therefore, the 2020 edition of the tournament was set to take place in Australia. But, the tournament was postponed due to Covid 19 Pandemic. The first official tournament was in 2007. India lifted the cup defeating Pakistan. The 2022 t20 world cup to be played is the eighth tournament. The ICC t20 world cup will be played in Australia in October-November 2022.

About the Participating Teams & the Tournament Format

Australia is the defending champion of the t20 world cup. They won the championship beating New Zealand in the finals in 2021 in the UAE. 16 teams are participating in the 2022 t20 world cup. The top 10 teams based on the ICC rankings qualify straightaway. However, the six other teams are chosen from the members based on their performances in the T20 World Cup Qualifier matches.

There are 86 teams fighting for 15 spots. The host Australia has secured its position. The top 8 teams of the T20 2021 World cup qualify to participate in the tournament straight away. This means you have 8 spots. For this, 4 teams would play round one based on their previous World Cup performance. The other four teams would be the best performers in the qualifier matches and the performances in the ICC tournaments throughout the year.

Tournament Format

The tournament includes a group stage. It will involve knock-out matches, and the semifinals and the final will follow it. The teams will be divided into two groups- Group A and Group B. the top two teams from each group qualify for the semifinals. The teams that hold the first two positions in Group A will play against Group B’s first and second positions, respectively. The top two teams will fight it out for the World cup 2022.

The Groups

As mentioned earlier, the groups for the top eight teams for the ICC t20 world cup 2022 have been announced. Let us look at the teams that fall under Group A and Group B in the 2022 t20 world cup.

The Teams in Group A: Australia, Afghanistan, England, New Zealand

The Teams in Group B: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and South Africa
