At Varanasi, Lata Mangeshkar’s Ashes were Immersed into The Ganga

Sister Usha Mangeshkar travelled to Varanasi with the urn carrying the ashes and dipped them inside the Ganga with some other family members.

In Varanasi, the ashes of legendary vocalist Lata Mangeshkar were submerged in the Ganga River by her family. On February 6, the Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar passed away at a hospital in Mumbai.

The urn holding the ashes had arrived in Varanasi with sister Usha Mangeshkar and other family members. They travelled to Ahilyabai Ghat by boat, which they took at Khidkiya Ghat. The remains were submerged in the Ganga’s midstream after completing Vedic ceremonies at the ghat under the supervision of priest Shrikant Pathak.

Her fans came at the ghat to pay their respects to the departed soul. After giving prayers at Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple, the family members went back to Mumbai. At 92, the famous vocalist passed away, and her body was cremated within Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.

Lata Ji’s Ashes Split to 3 Pots

Lata’s family, as per sources, preserved her ashes in 3 different pots, as is customary. Her remains were buried in Ramkund last month. Her ashes were immersed inside the river Godavari near Nashik, where her family performed the final ceremonies. The rites were also attended by Lata Mangeshkar’s nephew Adinath Mangeshkar and sister Usha Mangeshkar.

It was stated that Lata’s ashes would be transferred to Kashi and Hardwar after the plunge in Ramkund. One of the three pots was to be transported to Kashi to have the ashes immersed inside the Ganga, and the other was to be sent to Haridwar.

Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the intensive care unit on January 8 following testing positive for the virus and being treated for pneumonia. She died, unfortunately, on February 6 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Her cremation was held with complete state honours at Shivaji Park within Mumbai, and PM Narendra Modi was there.
