73rd Republic Day Celebration on Rajpath Delhi, Padma Shree for Neeraj Chopra and Devendra
On January 26, Republic Day is commemorated as among the most important days for Indian residents. It is commemorated to mark the start of the Indian constitution throughout 1950 when the country became a sovereign country free of British rule. This year, the nation is commemorating its 73rd Republic Day, with residents enjoying a national holiday and a military parade that begins on Rajpath in Delhi and concludes at India Gate. Devendra Jhajharia, a star para-athlete, was selected for the coveted Padma Bhushan award, the nation’s 3rd highest civilian honour, whilst Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic gold medalist in the javelin throw, was amongst the 8 athletes chosen for the Padma Shri award.
Jhajharia, 40, earned 3 Paralympic gold medals within the javelin. At the 2004 Athens Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won the gold medal. Last year, he took silver in the Tokyo Paralympics.
In August 2021, Neeraj Chopra made history by being the first Indian player to win an Olympic gold medal within a track and field category.
With both a throw of 87.58 meters in his 2nd attempt at the Tokyo Olympics, javelin hero Neeraj, who hails from a town close to Panipat within Haryana, became India’s first and sole track and field Olympic gold medallist.
Chopra, 24 years old, created history by being the first most Indian to win a gold medal in track and field events at the Tokyo Olympics. Besides shooter Abhinav Bindra, he also became the second Indian to achieve a solo Olympic gold.
